Update: We continue to monitor the system but early testing confirms that inbound and outbound call capacity has now been restored.

A power outage experienced by thousands of residents in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) after Tuesday’s torrential rain and flooding is still affecting phone systems in the General Council Office, located in Toronto’s west end. Technicians are at work, but we do not expect the phone system to be fully operational until next week.

While our Bloor Street head office remains without phone service due to power outages, we are still committed to supporting our communities. You can reach us by email at  info@united-church.ca

On July 16th, much of Toronto became a scene of submerged streets and highways, paralyzed transit systems, and countless flooded homes, leaving many residents stranded and without power. Extreme weather events, like this one and others we've seen across the country and around the world, serve as stark reminders of the growing threats posed by climate change. These events can also be catalysts for climate action. We must work assertively to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and curb the root cause of these intensifying weather patterns. This requires strong leadership from governments, along with a collective effort from businesses and individuals to embrace sustainable practices. Deepening Climate Integrity, including addressing denominational carbon emissions through programs like Faithful Footprints, is a key objective of the United Church's Strategic Plan.

Please continue to advocate for strong climate action policies and invest in sustainable solutions that safeguard cities, towns, and rural communities for the future. For ways to get involved in Climate action visit the United Church of Canada Climate action webpage.
