“I am the bread of life” –John 6:35
Bread is so important, both now and in the past. Bread is often mentioned in the bible: manna from heaven, breaking bread at the last supper, and of course, Jesus calling himself the bread of life.
Bread, or food in general, is a basic requirement for a healthy, happy life. For those of us with enough, it is taken for granted. For those who do not have enough, or with limited resources to buy food, it is a constant concern.
This Thanksgiving I pray that you can enjoy wonderful food with family and friends. But as you do, please remember those who are not able to do this. Remember that Jesus said to feed his flock and care for the children. Your gift to Mission and Service will provide food to those who are without, or who find food too expensive—Northern communities with extremely high prices, seniors who cannot afford nutritious meals, and communities around the world dealing with climate change which harms the harvests.
8.7 million Canadians—including 2.1 million children
experience food insecurity every day. Your decision to make a gift this Thanksgiving will make a difference in the lives of so many.

Food for the North
Many Northern communities depend on ice roads to bring in supplies, but these roads have become increasingly unstable or even impassable due to climate change. Food needs to be flown in, which increases prices and decreases supply. There is now even more pressure on these communities as wildfires become more and more common each year in the spring and summer. These also cause disruptions to food deliveries, and mean even higher food prices.
The Food for the North program provides grocery cards to help offset extremely high food prices. Your gifts to Mission and Service fund this important initiative and provide nutritious food to those who need it.
Due to climate change, food needs to be flown into many Northern communities, thereby increasing prices and decreasing supply.
Practical Solutions to Drought and Food Shortages
In Zimbabwe, severe drought and food shortages continue to take a toll on communities, but the Zimbabwe Council of Churches is leading efforts to provide support. In partnership with Mission and Service and the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, the Scaling Up Resilience Project focuses on practical, long-term solutions. By emphasizing climate-smart farming, gender equality, training, risk management, and community-driven initiatives, the project is helping families strengthen their resilience and work towards a more secure future.
Your gifts through Mission and Service have provided crucial support to partners like the Zimbabwe Council of Churches as they work toward a secure and sustainable future.
