Description

The Justice and Reconciliation Fund (1-2 Vacancies)

The Justice and Reconciliation Fund assists the church in responding to the legacy of harm and broken relationships that have resulted from the Indian Residential School system. The committee reviews applications and decides on grants to support projects or events that foster dialogue, reconciliation, and relationship-building between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

Skills and Experience

We are looking for people who can see the possibilities in an application and assess its merits. Members should understand the overall reconciliation goals of the United Church, the history of relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada, and the role of churches in residential schools. Members should also be familiar with the kinds of activities that support relationship-building and the education of church members on these topics. Members need to be open to collaborative decision-making.

Membership

The Justice and Reconciliation Fund Committee has five members, including both Indigenous and non-Indigenous United Church members. At this time the committee is seeking one Indigenous person from the North, the Prairies, Quebec, or Atlantic Canada.

Expectations and Term

Appointments are for three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a second term. There are two meetings each year, in the spring and fall, held by video or teleconference call. Members should have access to Internet for meetings and for receiving documents. To prepare for each meeting committee members carefully review 10‒20 project submissions, considering the criteria of the fund, the suitability of the budget, and overall merit.

Appointments will be made by the Indigenous Justice Advisory Committee.
