Opening/Closing Date: January 29, 2025 to March 20, 2025
Description
Nominations Committee: 8 Members
Can you recognize the spiritual gifts in others? Are you excited to create teams with the diversity of abilities and lived experiences needed to live out the church’s vision and call? The Nominations Committee is looking for new members to join them in assessing who has the right skills and the right calling to be a part of the church’s leadership.
Mandate
The Nominations Committee recommends appointments to the General Council Executive, and other committees, boards, task groups, or United Church representatives, as requested. In carrying out this responsibility, the committee
- reflects theologically on the basis for appointed member participation in the church
- discerns who is equipped to serve
- develops and test processes for selecting individuals and developing effective groups
- strives to meet the church’s commitments to equity, diversity, and the full participation of all people
Membership
The Nominations Committee consists of eight members who reflect the broad diversity of the United Church, with particular attention to its equity commitments and the presence of both lay people and ministry personnel from across the geography of the church. Two committee members will be members of the General Council Executive. To ensure Indigenous participation in this committee’s work, the National Indigenous Council may appoint an additional member to this committee.
To ensure continuity, approximately half of the committee positions will be filled through the reappointment of currently serving members.
Member Skills and Experience
We are seeking members who bring experience in spiritual discernment, nominations, or other leadership-selection processes; have the ability to recognize gifts in others; and are able to encourage others to serve in the church. Members must be willing to stay open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, to listen and speak with trust, to work with consensus processes, and to maintain confidentiality.
United Church Relationship: Active participant or full member
Expectations and Term
The Nominations Committee meets in the spring and fall of each year by videoconference call, with shorter meetings as needed. A three-day in-person meeting will be held at the end of the triennium (late spring 2028). If needed, and approved within the General Council Office Travel Policy, the committee may also meet in-person within the first year of the term.
The term of this appointment is for three years (August 2025–August 2028) with the possibility of reappointment for a second three-year term.
