Nominations Committee (1 vacancy)

The Nominations Committee is seeking another member! We are looking for someone from the prairie or Atlantic provinces who is willing to use discernment practices to encourage and recommend a diversity of church leaders.

The Nominations Committee recommends appointments to the General Council Executive, and other committees, boards, task groups, or United Church representatives, as requested. In carrying out this responsibility, the committee

  • reflects theologically on the basis for appointed member participation in the church
  • discerns who is equipped to serve
  • develops and test processes for selecting individuals and developing effective groups
  • strives to meet the church’s commitments to equity, diversity, and the full participation of all people

Members of the Nominations Committee will actively seek out and encourage nominations from across the diversity of the church.

All boards and committees of the General Council play a role in living into the Call and Vision of the United Church in fulfilling their responsibilities. Boards and committees work in partnership with the General Council Office as it implements the strategic objectives for 2022‒2025.

The Nominations Committee consists of eight members who reflect the broad diversity of the United Church, with particular attention to its equity commitments and the presence of both lay people and ministry personnel from across the geography of the church. Two committee members will be members of the General Council Executive. To ensure Indigenous participation in this committee’s work, the National Indigenous Council may appoint an additional member to this committee.

Member Skills and Experience

We are seeking members who bring experience in spiritual discernment, nominations, or other leadership-selection processes; have the ability to recognize gifts in others; and are able to encourage others to serve in the church. Members must be willing to stay open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, to listen and speak with trust, to work with consensus processes, and to maintain confidentiality. To strengthen the geographical connections of the committee, we are particularly in need of someone from the prairie or Atlantic provinces who has good connections and knowledge of leaders and upcoming leaders in those regions.

Expectations and Term

The Nominations Committee meets as needed, primarily by videoconference call. As needed and possible, the committee may meet in person for meetings of up to three days. The term of this appointment is until the conclusion of the 45th General Council meeting in August 2025, with the possibility of reappointment for a second three-year term.
