Judicial Committee (3 vacancies) 

We are seeking three people from across the church who are knowledgeable in legal processes and the governance of the church. 

Mandate 

The Judicial Committee is an essential part of the United Church’s structure. It assesses appeals to determine whether there are grounds for the appeal to be heard. 

The Judicial Committee is responsible for dealing with all appeals to the General Council of  

  • decisions of formal hearings held by a community of faith or regional council
  • other decisions of regional councils
  • decisions of the Executive of the General Council
  • decisions of the Board of Vocation
  • rulings of the General Secretary of the General Council 

The Judicial Committee appoints hearing committees for any appeals that will be heard. The Judicial Committee works with General Council staff to provide orientation and guidance for the hearing committees, receives their decisions, and reports their actions to the General Council. 

Membership 

The Judicial Committee is made up of up to nine members who reflect the diversity of the United Church, with particular attention to its equity commitments and the presence of both lay people and ministry personnel from across the geography of the church. At least four of these members will be specialists, which means they have previous legal or administrative tribunal experience. A chair is selected from the members of the Judicial Committee. The chair’s duties include facilitating meetings and fostering an effective and respectful team. 

Member Skills and Experience 

All members of the Judicial Committee will have an aptitude for and skills in legal processes or in the governance of the church. Those serving as specialists have legal or administrative tribunal experience as assessed by the chair and resource staff of the Judicial Committee. 

United Church Relationship: Full member 

Expectations and Term 

The committee meets as needed by video-conference call, usually three or four times per year.

Terms of appointment are for nine years beginning in August 2025 at the conclusion of the 45th General Council.
