Rev. Dr. Japhet Ndhlovu found deep spiritual inspiration from Rev. Dr. Bernice A. King and more at our communion partner’s annual gathering

This summer, I had the transformative privilege of attending the General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Memphis, Tennessee. From July 12 to 15, delegates from across the United States came together under the powerful theme of “BEYOND”, inspired by Ephesians 3:20–21. The atmosphere was electric with anticipation, and from the moment I walked in, I knew I was about to witness something extraordinary.
Riveting Worship: Where Spirit Met Song and Speakers
Each day’s worship was nothing short of astounding. The singing poured out like living water—strong, spirited, and soul-moving. Voices blended in unity, inviting all present to transcend their own limits. You could feel the room pulse with hope and possibility, as if heaven itself had drawn closer for those sacred moments.
What set this assembly apart was the caliber of its speakers, who delivered piercing and uncompromising messages rooted deeply in truth. Each preacher approached the theme from a unique perspective, collectively challenging us to rethink our limitations in serving God and humanity, reflect on the legacies that have shaped our faith journeys, and embody humility and unity. They reminded us that God's power is perfected in a humble spirit and inspired us to harness our creative energy and innovation to address the world's most pressing needs. Through their direct and powerful words, they ignited a call to action, urging us to live out our faith in meaningful and impactful ways.
One of the most profound moments for me was the introduction and sermon delivered by Rev. Dr. Bernice A. King, the daughter of the legendary late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Her presence brought a deep sense of history, strength, and conviction to the gathering, making her sermon an unforgettable highlight of the assembly.
Dr. King reflected profoundly on legacy, powerfully recalling her father's final sermon and its enduring significance in the ongoing fight for justice and equality. She emphasized the importance of remembering the spiritual foundation upon which the civil rights movement was built—a foundation rooted deeply in faith and anchored by unwavering belief in the transformative power of the Spirit. Her message was a passionate call to activate this divine power, urging individuals to unite in purposeful action driven by justice and compassion.
Moreover, Dr. King highlighted humility and unity as essential prerequisites for allowing God's power to move through us effectively, reminding listeners that true change arises not only from bold action but also from a collective spirit grounded in love and mutual respect. Through her reflections, she inspired renewed commitment to a movement fueled by both spiritual conviction and practical dedication to equality.
Dr. King emphasized that God is able to do immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine. In her words, God's power is unlimited, works through each of us, and calls us to go beyond our own limitations for the glory of God and the service of others. She concluded by inviting the assembly to pray for humility, innovation, and boldness—challenging us to activate the power within ourselves and our community to meet the world's urgent needs. The worship, the words spoken, and especially Dr. King's message called each of us to trust in God's unlimited power, look beyond our circumstances, and give glory to God.
The closing prayer of assembly was not just a ritual, but a true invocation—a call for humility, boldness, and unity. Together, we asked for divine guidance to activate the immense power working within us. Standing among so many who share the commitment to transform the world, I truly felt the living, breathing body of Christ in motion.
Lasting Impressions
As I left Memphis, the echoes of worship and the weight of words spoken during the assembly lingered deep within me. In a world where justice work often feels like a heavy lift, witnessing the vibrant faith and purposeful work of our full communion partner had been a powerful reminder of what is possible when we gather with open hearts and willing spirits.
I walked away with a renewed sense of purpose: to push past comfort, to shatter apathy, and to break free from old limitations. To every voice that sang, every word that spoke, and every soul that worshipped, I thank you for lifting me up, for pushing me forward, and for reminding me what it means to live boldly, unapologetically, and unrelentingly BEYOND.
