Celebrating an unforgettable moment of partnership and solidarity in Memphis at the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) General Assembly

What a time to rejoice! My heart overflows with happiness and deep appreciation following a historic and heartfelt decision made by our full communion partners, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Their bold affirmation of Canadian sovereignty and self-determination at the recent General Assembly in Memphis marks not just a policy resolution, but a new era of unity, compassion, and Christian love.
A Milestone in Our Shared Journey
From the very beginning, our full communion relationship has been rooted in a shared commitment to valuing each other’s theology, ministry, and traditions. In 2019, the United Church of Canada and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) entered into a full communion agreement grounded in a shared commitment to visible Christian unity without merging their denominational identities. This covenantal relationship is built on mutual recognition of members and ministers, shared sacraments, and a common confession of Christ. The partnership enables collaborative worship, mission, and social justice work across both Canada and the United States. By recognizing each other’s ministries and sacraments, both churches affirm that together they can accomplish more in service to God’s call—offering a meaningful witness to unity in diversity within the broader Christian community.
The decision to reaffirm these principles—especially in times of political tension and uncertainty—demonstrates the resolute spirit and prophetic courage of our partners. This was shown in action when the recent held General Assembly passed the motion GA 2520 – Calling the Church to Affirm the Sovereignty and Self-Determination of their Canadian Siblings.
The adopted resolution did more than acknowledge Canada’s cultural and spiritual distinctiveness; it recognized our dignity, affirmed our partnership, and stood against divisive rhetoric. It was a true act of covenantal love.

Voices That Inspired: Wisdom and Courage in Action
The Assembly was alive with the vibrant voices of passionate individuals who echoed a powerful message of unity, love, and justice throughout the halls. Speakers reminded us that our partnership is built on the foundation of mutual respect and shared values of justice and peacemaking, all inspired by the profound teachings of Jesus. With conviction and courage, reverends and leaders boldly declared the importance of words, affirming their commitment to reject any language or policy that threatens or diminishes the identities of their Canadian siblings. The call to live out the gospel as peacemakers resonated deeply, urging the delegates to stand up for the vulnerable and voice unwavering support for one another. Personal testimonies shared by those involved in international partnerships touched hearts, highlighting the profound impact of these relationships and the invaluable lessons we learn from each other. These voices serve as a poignant reminder that the Church is not just an institution, but a living, breathing community of faith—a family that chooses love over silence and unity over division. In this sacred space, we were reminded of the transformative power of love, compassion, and solidarity, and we were inspired to continue walking the path of justice and peacemaking, together.
What This Means for Us
As we emerged from the Assembly, it was clear that our partnership had been strengthened by the shared experiences and hopes that we had courageously brought to the table. Through open and honest dialogue, our trust in one another had deepened, and our bond had grown stronger. The statement that came out of the Assembly served as a powerful witness to the world, shining a beacon of justice and compassion that modeled what it means to embody Christ's reconciling love. In that sacred space, every voice was valued, and every culture was honored, empowering us to follow the Spirit with freedom and faithfulness. Together, we were better equipped to live out our faith, celebrating our diversity and unity in a beautiful harmony that reflected the love of Christ.
Overflowing with Gratitude
The Assembly erupted in a powerful display of unity as the vote was unanimously passed, with only one dissenting voice. In a heartfelt gesture of solidarity, the entire hall joined the few Canadians present in spontaneously singing "O Canada." To every leader, delegate, and partner who voted, spoke, or prayed in support, I extend my deepest gratitude. Your witness has given us a renewed sense of hope in a world often marked by fragmentation and uncertainty. Through your actions, you have shown that true communion is not just a concept, but a living reality that is alive in courageous conversations, tangible solidarity, and unwavering commitment. May this decision fill our hearts with a renewed sense of purpose as we continue on this journey together—courageously, faithfully, and joyfully—following the path that Christ has laid before us. As we move forward, let us remain steadfast in our commitment to deepening our partnership and embodying the boundless love that transcends borders and unites us all. We will continue the celebration of this momentous occasion, and we do so together, hand in hand!
