United Church stands for justice as Rodrigo Duterte faces International Criminal Court hearing

September 23 will mark a significant day at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, the Netherlands, where judges will decide whether the case against former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte for crimes against humanity will proceed.
Duterte’s controversial “War on Drugs” has been widely condemned for resulting in the extrajudicial killings of thousands, many of them poor Filipinos, and in some cases children caught in the crossfire. Following years of documentation and testimonies—particularly from women of the “Rise Up” community who lost family members—the ICC arrested Duterte on March 11, 2025.
The upcoming hearing will determine whether the case advances to trial. Observers and human rights advocates remain concerned that Duterte could attempt to evade accountability.
The United Church of Canada, long committed to justice and human rights, is calling for vigilance and prayer in support of the Filipino people, the ICC process, and the rule of law.
“This hearing represents a critical moment for international justice,” said Rev. Dr. Japhet Ndhlovu, Executive Minister of Church in Mission with the United Church. “We stand with our Filipino siblings in their call for truth, accountability, and the protection of human dignity. Our hope is that the ICC will uphold the rule of law and ensure that justice is done.”
As Martin Luther King Jr. reminded the world, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” The United Church expresses solidarity with those seeking justice and urges Canadians to keep the Filipino people in prayer during this historic moment.
Prayer for Justice
O God of justice,
Hear the cries of those who have lost loved ones—prematurely, unfairly, and without justice.
They are still crying. Still praying. Still longing for your justice to come.
O God who knows our suffering and feels the weight of oppression, may your justice be done. May it come on earth as it is in heaven. We pray for the members of the International Criminal Court: grant them wisdom, courage, and a steadfast commitment to truth as they pursue justice.
May your justice bring healing to those who are grieving.
May it kindle hope that your eternal ways will prevail.
Let justice roll down like mighty waters, and let your light be our guide and our hope.
We pray and work for just peace in the Philippines, and across this world.
Amen.
