The Uganda Martyrs’ United Church was recognized by the United Church in 2008.
The Uganda Martyrs’ Church of Canada has extended a welcome to the wider GTA community to join them for their commemoration of the Centennial of The United Church of Canada and Uganda Martyrs Day on May 25, 2pm, at 2799 Weston Rd, North York, Ontario.
“We want to invite all communities of faith to this special celebration,” said Tracy Wanyama, a leader at the church. “It will feature very special music, powerful testimonies and a message of hope and resilience.”
Special guest speaker will be Rev. Michael Blair, General Secretary of The United Church of Canada.
Uganda Martyrs United Church of Canada began as an ecumenical community of Ugandans from diverse religious backgrounds. It is dedicated to celebrating the sacraments, deepening faith, and building a community centered on Christ’s love. The church was accompanied by the Rev. Dr. Isaac Kawuki-Mukasa (former staff in the Ethnic Ministries Unit), until it became a fully recognized pastoral charge of The United Church of Canada in 2008 by the former Toronto South-West presbytery of the Toronto Conference.
The Uganda Martyrs’ Day is celebrated on June 3 and commemorates the 22 Catholic and 23 Anglican converts to Christianity who were executed for their faith in the kingdom of Buganda, now part of Uganda, between January 31, 1885, and January 27, 1887.
