Despite increasingly clear evidence of the climate emergency and compounding threats to democracy and environmental and human rights, leaders across the world and in Canada are failing to take the decisive action needed.

In October, Canadian faith leaders including The United Church of Canada called for a course correction to an Economy of Life, where people and the natural world flourish, in a statement released by For the Love of Creation (FLC).

Add your voice to the call for course correction by signing and sharing this important statement. With the COP31 UN Climate Conference upon us, there is an opportune moment to live this out.

From November 9–20, world leaders, civil society, Indigenous peoples, grassroots movements, global partners, and churches will attend the COP31 Climate Conference in Antalya, Turkiye, to advance climate action. At COP31, ACT Alliance and the World Council of Churches’ delegations are specifically calling for an equitable, orderly, and rapid phase-out of coal, oil, and gas. They also call for delivery on the promise made by wealthy countries at COP29 of providing 300 billion USD of climate funding yearly by 2035, and for governments to stand by their Paris Agreement and UN Climate Convention responsibilities and commitments.

During the weekend of November 13–15, 2026, FLC invites groups across Canada to host candlelight vigils in their own communities. Candles for COP31 is a time to share love for our planet, as well as concern for ourselves, for humanity, and all our non-human relations at risk from climate change. It is also a time to pray for truly transformative action to happen at COP.

We invite all to please join our national online vigil Monday, November 9, at 7 p.m. ET. Register now.

In-person vigils have been planned already in:

  • Regina: Tuesday, November 10, 6 p.m. CT (at the Healing Garden at Westminster United Church)
  • Toronto: Thursday, November 12, 5:30 p.m. ET (walk from Mary Ward Centre to Queen’s Park, RSVP)
  • Montreal: Friday, November 13, 5:30 p.m. ET (at Square St. James, see more details)
  • Winnipeg: November 13–15 (held during worship at the United Church General Council Executive meeting)
  • Ottawa: November 17 at 7 p.m. ET (at St. François d’Assise Church)

Join a vigil to highlight local and global climate-related issues, such as climate finance for mitigation, adaptation, and loss and damage in the Global South.

If you would like to host a vigil for your congregation, you can find prayer resources and an opportunity to add your event details to the map here.
