What did you do?
The United Community Ministry, a collaborative ministry of four United Church congregations in East Central Ontario (Cannington, Woodville, Oakwood, and Cambray) was so excited to receive one of the 100 Tables as part of the 100th Celebration of The United Church of Canada. We placed our table in the middle of our garden plots that are part of our Collaborative Garden Plot Project in Woodville. Gardeners from all four congregations planted, watered, weeded, and harvested fresh vegetables for delivery to any of the four Foodbanks in our communities. During the month of July, we held weekly Wednesday morning activities at the table to draw awareness to food scarcity in our communities. The sessions included meeting a Food Bank volunteer to hear about their work, ‘Music in the Garden’ where we gathered to sing about songs about creation, and even vegetables! And we learned a lot more about what vegetables need to produce vigorous, delicious produce! Our Table project was highlighted in an article in the local Lindsay newspaper (Kawartha Lakes Weekly) too!
Why did you do it?
Our Table was the center of conversations and learning and building of relationships as gardeners picked produce and got them ready to deliver to the local Food Banks. Over the weeks in July, it was at this table that we gathered and shared our gardening stories, and continued to deepen the relationships between our churches and within the community. Neighbours came by to talk, and the local firefighters came to fill up the water tote for the garden! We had volunteers from the community help to water and weed our gardens! The table was truly a sign of caring for others!
