This is church—right here. This table is for you. Your story matters. Come talk about anything.

What did you do?

Our plans have evolved as more people have gotten involved. In the end, our youth group built two picnic tables from kits and painted them turquoise (a nod to The Turquoise Table: Finding Community and Connection in Your Own Front Yard). They made it outside just in time—by the end of October! We’re currently having a sign made to attach to the table.

We also created a second sign that reads: “THIS IS CHURCH—RIGHT HERE. This table is for you. Your story matters. Come talk about anything! St. Andrew’s United in the community.” That sign will go up whenever the minister is sitting out there. Since it’s getting colder, that probably won’t happen until spring. In the meantime, every Wednesday morning I lead a trivia game at the tables with the kids waiting for the bus—and even a few high schoolers stop by to join in on their way to school! It will be fun to see how the community connects around the tables!

Why did you do it?

To be a visible sign that the church is not merely within the walls of the community, and provide a place for community connection.
