What did you do?
On June 22nd, we hosted an event for the community to share a meal with us, explore the gardens and hike the trails, do crafts, play games, and have lots of fun. There was something for children as well as adults—activities like painting rocks for the garden, planting seeds in pots to take home, face painting, bubbles, and soccer. Maps to the trails were provided, with clues for a scavenger hunt in the gardens and in the woods. We offered both a potluck lunch as well as hot dogs and cotton candy.
Why did you do it?
We are blessed with a large property that includes fields, woods, and gardens. We maintain trails through the woods and many community members use the trails for hiking and dog walking. We have a number of different gardens dedicated to different types of plants: a butterfly garden, medicine garden, herb garden, and a kids garden. We have partnered with the AIDS Committee of Durham Region to host a vegetable garden that their members can access for fresh produce. There is a large grassy area for playing games and sports. Because we have these amazing assets, we encourage our neighbours to visit these spaces. This event gave us the opportunity to spread the word more widely on what we have to offer in our natural environment.
