What We Did
We decided to purchase two picnic tables from our local SaskAbilities woodshop. This organization employs persons with disabilities. Our intention is to have the tables on our property and available to the community. We hosted Camp Fyrefly from September 18 to 20, and were intending that the campers would be able to paint our tables with messages and symbols of welcome and inclusion, but the wood was still too wet. Instead, we purchased lawn signs and permanent markers for them to make signs instead. We hope to have them paint the tables next year.
Why We Did It
We are hoping that the tables become a symbol of welcoming to our neighbourhood. Our building houses a Spanish preschool/kindergarten program. We are located right next to a bus stop. One of our members runs a "Feeding Our Neighbours" program in which she brings volunteers and people with intellectual challenges together to make bagged lunches to distribute to people experiencing homelessness. We want the picnic tables to be another way to show care to others.
