As the United Church of Canada grieves the death of The Very Rev. Robert Frederick Smith, the denomination’s 30th Moderator, we invite all to join in watching an online livestream of his memorial service at 2 pm (PST) on January 17.
Born in Montreal in 1934, Rev. Smith served as Moderator of the United Church from 1984–1986, and is perhaps best known for delivering the first official Apology from the church to Indigenous Peoples at the 1986 General Council. Rev. Smith died in Sechelt, British Columbia on Monday, December 8, 2025, after a few years of hospital and family care.
We hope all will join in gathering in memory of a beloved church leader, friend, and family member.
